SAN DIEGO – After a lightning delay postponed Wednesday night's match to Thursday morning, the Aztecs came out firing in a 2-1 exhibition win over Arizona on Thursday at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.
Arizona scored the opener in the 36th minute to take a 1-0 lead at the break. However, it was the Aztecs who came out strong in the second half. Rachelle Elve tied the game at 1-1 at the 53:37 mark, off an assist by Trinity Coker.
Elve turned provider just 12 seconds later when she assisted Emma Gaines-Ramos' strike to stun the Wildcats, and put the Aztecs ahead 2-1 with just over a half hour to play.
The Aztecs defense remained strong, and limited Arizona in the final half hour to preserve the 2-1 win.
Between the posts Cameron Illingworth made six saves, while on the offensive side the Aztecs posted 12 shots on the day, with four of them coming on frame.
San Diego State will open their 2022 season on the road at Nebraska on August 18 at 7:00 p.m. CT, the match will be streamed via BIG + (subscription required).
