SAN DIEGO – Champions in the pool and now champions in the classroom, the San Diego State swimming and diving team was named a College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team for its 3.34 team grade point average (GPA) in the Spring 2022 semester. The announcement was made from the organization's headquarters in Richmond, Va.

"(Aztec head) coach (Mike) Shrader continues to make the university proud in both the pool and classroom," CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart said.

The Aztecs have earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team designation for the 13th consecutive semester, and since the start of the 2012-13 school year, San Diego State has been recognized in 19-of-20 semesters. Teams qualify for recognition if they have a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher for every student-athlete who competed in the designated semester.

"The swimming and diving program consistently excels in the classroom," Executive Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services Bobby Smitheran said. "The 13th straight semester of receiving such recognition highlights the student-athletes desire to strive academically. The Student-Athlete Academic Support Services staff is proud of their achievement and their dedication to embodying the very best of our student-athletes".

San Diego State is one of 441 institutions, covering a total of 731 men's and women's programs, honored for its academic success.  Teams were selected based on their Spring 2022 grade point averages and, in total, represent 17,845 student-athletes.

SDSU finished the 2021-22 season with its sixth Mountain West Championship in the last 12 campaigns and its 13th consecutive top-three finish in that event. The Aztecs went a perfect 12-0 in dual meets to give SDSU its seventh perfect dual meet season in the last nine years. Coach Shrader was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year for the eighth time and senior Klara Thormalm earned Mountain West Swimmer of the Year honors for the third time in as many seasons, making 2021-22 the fourth consecutive year the Aztecs have earned at least one postseason honor from the conference. The Aztecs finished 37th at the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships thanks to performances from Thormalm and freshman diver Valentina Lopez Arevalo.
