NAPA, Calif. – The Aztec women's golf team wrapped up the first round of the Silverado Showdown Monday at the Silverado Resort. SDSU is tied for 11th place after 18 holes after shooting a 303 (+15). The Aztecs were led by Anika Sato, who shot 73 (+1), good for a tie for 14th place.
Sato had three birdies and finished the day tied for fourteenth overall. Her score of 73 was over three strokes lower than the course average, which was a 76.33. Two other Aztecs finished close behind her. Sara Kjellker and Bernice Olivarez Ilas both shot 75 (+3), which put the pair in a tie for 30th. Kjellker finished the first round with a birdie on the 17th hole and had 13 pars throughout her round, which was tied for the fourth most by all competitors on Monday. Olivarez Ilas finished her day with two birdies in total, one on the tricky par 5 fifth hole and one on the par 3 15th hole.
Esti Garcia Rubio and Anna Lina Otten rounded out the group of Aztecs who competed on Monday. Garcia Rubio finished +8 and in a tie for 70th, and finished her round with a birdie on the par 5 18th hole, while Lina Otten finished +9 and tied for 76th overall.
As for the team category, the Aztecs sit in 11th place at the end of day one. However, they are only one stroke behind No. 6 Arizona State and are only six strokes behind fifth place No. 26 Arizona.
