COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State's Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) has been named the Mountain West Men's Golf Freshman of the Week, the league announced Thursday. It is the first career MW accolade for Townsend.
Townsend tied for ninth out of 95 golfers at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic earlier this week at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club at 6-under 210. The ninth-place effort was tied with LSU's Cohen Trolio for the best finish by a freshman in the 95-man field. Townsend bettered the 25 other competitors from the Mountain West with the next-closet competitor at 3-under. Townsend had back-to-back 3-under 69s on Monday, tying a collegiate career low, and an even-par 72 on Tuesday. The 210 tied his career-collegiate low for 54 holes. Townsend shined on the par 4s, posting a 3.80 scoring average, which tied the winner (LSU's Nicholas Arcement) for the lowest average in the 95-man field.
On the season, Townsend is averaging 73.47 in 15 rounds across five tournaments.
The Aztecs next compete at the National Invitational Tournament at Omni Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Arizona, from March 18-19.
