SAN DIEGO – With a win in the 1-meter diving competition last week versus San Diego, Valentina Lopez Arevalo has earned the Mountain West Conference's Diver and Freshman of the Week honors for the week ending Jan. 30. The announcement was made from the conference's office in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday morning.
Lopez Arevalo, a native of Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, helped lead the Aztecs to the team's 36th consecutive dual meet victory, by the score of 159-123 over San Diego last Friday. The last time SDSU lost a dual meet was on Jan. 8, 2018. That is more than 4 years, or 1,485 days without a dual meet loss.
Lopez Arevalo set season and collegiate bests in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
She won the 1-meter competition with a score of 292.28, more than five points ahead of the second-place finisher. It was the best score for an Aztec on the 1-meter board this year as well as a Zone E Championship qualifying score.
In the 3-meter event, her 288.38 was also a season and career-high, placed her in fifth, and was also a Zone E Championship qualifying mark.
These are the first two weekly Mountain West honors for Lopez Arevalo, and the second and third this season for an Aztec diver.
San Diego State's diving team has one more tune-up competition, Feb. 3-5 at the NAU Diving Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz. The divers will then join the swimmers in College Station, Texas on Feb. 16-19 for the Mountain West Championships.
