SAN DIEGO – San Diego State senior Sammy Geyer has been named the Mountain West Conference's Swimmer of the Week covering all competitions during the month of December. The announcement was made from the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday morning.
In dual meet wins over Cal Poly and Air Force and a total of six races, the Cheyenne, Wyo., native won a team-high five times and was part of the fastest time in the other race which was scored as an exhibition.
Against Cal Poly, on Dec. 20, 2021, she raced three times and won each time she got into the pool. In winning the 200 Meter Relay (1:45.21), she and her teammates were more than four seconds faster than the next closest finisher. She won the 100 Breaststroke in 1:03.96, more than three seconds faster than the second-place finisher and she won the 100 Free in 52.88, nearly a second faster than the next swimmer to stop the clock.
Against Air Force, on Dec. 21, 2021, she competed in three races, won two and had the fastest time in the other. She was part of the winning 200 Meter Relay (1:44.37), which finished nearly three seconds ahead of the second-place team. In winning the 50 Free (23.92), she finished in a dead heat with teammate Lizzie Menzmer. Finally, in the 200 Free Relay (1:35.69), she and her teammates recorded the fastest time by more than two and half seconds, but with the meet win in hand, the performance was scored as an exhibition.
This is the first conference swimmer of the week honor for Geyer and the third for an Aztec this year.
