SAN DIEGO – San Diego State junior Alex Scemanenco (Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif.) was victorious in singles competition to highlight the final day of action for the Aztecs at the SDSU Fall Invitational Sunday on the courts of Aztec Tennis Center.
The weekend round-robin event was comprised of players from Arizona, UNLV, Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego, along with the Aztecs.
After dropping a hard-fought decision on Saturday, Scemanenco rebounded to defeat UNLV's Tom Ciszewski, 6-2, 6-1, for his third win of the year.
However, SDSU's two other participants were not as fortunate against their respective Rebel combatants, as sophomore Judson Blair (Salem, Ore.) fell short to Zac Brodney, 6-1, 7-6(5), while fellow classmate Roni Rikkonen (Tampere, Finland) was upended by Thomas Navarro, 6-2, 6-4.
Earlier in doubles, the Aztecs came up empty against a pair of Arizona tandems. Rikkonen and Scemanenco suffered an 8-1 defeat at the hands of Jared Harwood and Nick Lagaev, while Blair combined with UC San Diego's Zach Ermert to face Jett Middleton and Conner Olsen. However, the Wildcat duo prevailed by an 8-4 count.
San Diego State returns to action next week when the full squad travels up the coast for the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, Oct. 21-24, in Malibu, California.
