SAN DIEGO – After a brief hiatus, the San Diego State men's tennis team resumes its tournament slate this weekend when it plays host to the SDSU Fall Invitational, Oct. 15-17, at Aztec Tennis Center.
Along with SDSU, the three-day event includes players from Arizona, UNLV, Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego in a hidden dual format consisting of both doubles and singles. The action commences with doubles competition at 9 a.m. all three days and admission is free.
Representing the Aztecs in their first home competition of the season are junior Alex Scemanenco (Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif.), sophomore Judson Blair (Salem, Ore.) and fellow classmate Roni Rikkonen (Tampere, Finland).
Blair and Scemanenco made their lone appearances of the fall at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic last month in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Blair posted a 3-2 record in singles at the event, advancing to the Flight Two consolation finals where he fell in a narrow super-tiebreaker.
In addition, Scemanenco logged a 2-1 mark in the main draw of the same flight before retiring in his semifinal match with an ailing shoulder. The SDSU teammates also joined forces in doubles where they split two matches.
Rikkonen, meanwhile, will be seeing his first action of the season after posting three singles victories during the abbreviated 2021 spring campaign as a true freshman. The native Finn is expected to team up with Blair in the Aztecs' first doubles match on Friday.
Following this weekend's tournament, select SDSU players will compete in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, Oct. 21-24, on the campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
