SAN DIEGO — San Diego State head lacrosse coach Kylee White announced four captains for the 2022 campaign. Acting as the team's four leaders this year are seniors Bailey Brown, Shelby Hook, Cailin Young, and junior Sam Horan.
"I believe the four captains voted for by their teammates are the right people to help keep the energy up and focus where it needs to be as we return to a more normalized fall season," noted White. "They do not just talk the talk; they walk it too. The four selected captains love Aztec Lacrosse and respect the legacy of great leaders before them. I am proud of Bailey, Shelby, Sam, and Cailin for all their hard work and dedication to this program over the last 3-4 years. It is truly their love for this program that has made them some of the best leaders on The Mesa. The leadership shown by our captains and the senior class is inspiring and will lead this program to a brand-new level."
Each of the four selected captains made an impact in the 2021 season that saw the Aztecs earn a historic win over USC and four wins over Pac-12 programs.
Brown will be a captain for the Aztecs for the second consecutive campaign, utilizing the extra year of eligibility offered by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During her senior campaign, the Katy, Texas native was tied-for-second on the team in total points (32), second in total goals (26), and the only member of the team with a .800-or-above SOG% when shooting at least 30 times. She was the only MPSF student-athlete to win both an offensive and defensive player of the week honor in the 2021 season.
Hook is a vocal leader of the San Diego State defense and is known as the energizer of the defense when they need a boost through a difficult game. She collected key ground balls throughout the season that helped lead the Aztecs to important wins in 2021. The Temecula, Calif. native finished her junior season with 15 ground balls, the fifth-most by any member of the San Diego State lacrosse program, while tying for the third-most caused turnovers throughout the campaign with fellow 2022 captain Cailin Young (8 apiece).
Horan collected 14 saves during her three-game stint as the Aztecs' netminder in 2021. Her best outing came in SDSU's matchup with Coastal Carolina, where the San Rafael, Calif. native secured 6 saves in 44:55 spent in the net. With SDSU career saves leader Katy Sharretts graduating, Horan looks to head up the Aztecs' goalkeeping corps and continue the legacy of Scarlet and Black netminders before her.
In her third season on the Mesa, Young scored 10 goals on 23 shots while collecting 29 draw controls, causing eight turnovers, and snagging seven ground balls. The San Juan Capistrano, Calif. native was a staple in the Aztecs' offensive and defensive attacks throughout 2021 and will lead SDSU's midfielders alongside fellow captain Brown to new heights during the 2022 season.
SDSU kicks off Fall Ball action on Oct. 2 with a scrimmage at Arizona State. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m. PT.
