SAN DIEGO –  The San Diego State men's tennis program has proudly announced the addition of graduate transfer Joe Tyler (Corby, England) to the Aztec roster for the 2021-22 season.

A four-year letterwinner at the University of Iowa from 2018-21, Tyler has an extra season of athletic eligibility remaining due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is expected to play a significant role in SDSU's doubles and singles lineup during the upcoming campaign.

"Joe was one of the best British players among his recruiting class when he first entered college tennis," said Aztec head coach Gene Carswell. "He brings a wealth of high-level collegiate experience to our program and possesses great leadership intangibles. We can't wait to start working with him this fall."

A native of Corby, England, Tyler has amassed 56 singles victories during his collegiate career, including 40 wins in dual-match competition, where he alternated primarily between the second, third and fourth positions on the Hawkeyes' ladder.

In addition, Tyler has proven himself as a clutch performer, winning 14 career singles matches in three sets, including those that have been decided by a 10-point tiebreaker.

In doubles play, Tyler racked up 52 wins over the past four years, including 39 in dual matches, where he saw action at all three spots in Iowa's rotation.

Tyler crafted his most successful season for the Hawkeyes as a freshman in 2017-18, posting 19 singles victories and 17 doubles triumphs. During the spring slate, he logged a 7-3 record at the No. 4 singles position and teamed with Jake Jacoby for a 14-8 mark at No. 3 doubles, helping the Hawkeyes win 16 matches, their fourth-highest total in program history, to go with a high ranking of No. 40 in the ITA team poll.

In addition, Tyler has witnessed success in fall tournament play, logging a runner-up finish in doubles alongside teammate Oliver Okonkwo at the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he also captured the consolation singles title.

Prior to college, Tyler compiled a 33-15 singles record on the junior circuit to go with a 45-10 mark in doubles competition. He attained a No. 28 Men's Open ranking in Great Britain and rose to as high as No. 2 in the UK's U18 rankings.

Tyler enjoyed a productive campaign in 2016, capturing a pair of singles titles at the EuroElite ITF Junior Malmö Open in Sweden and the 1st Qatar ITF Junior Open in Doha, Qatar, along with a runner-up finish at the XXII International Junior de Leiria in Portugal.

An exceptional student, Tyler landed a spot on the Dean's List at Iowa in the fall of 2020 before earning his undergraduate degree in economics. He plans to enroll in the Master of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences (MALAS) program at San Diego State.
