SAN DIEGO -- Former Aztecs continue to produce at the professional level.
In the NBA, Malachi Flynn (2020) played in three games last week for Toronto, starting one. Flynn averaged 6.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 0.3 steals per game. In his start on Saturday, he scored 15 points to go with seven rebounds. Jalen McDaniels (2018-19) started in all four games for Charlotte last week. McDaniels averaged 8.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.0 steal, and 1.3 blocks per game. The highlight of his week was McDaniels' first career double double on Tuesday with 10 points and 12 rebounds in a win in Detroit. The Hornets are the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. Kawhi Leonard (2019-20) started the three games for the Los Angeles Clippers last week. In 33 minutes, averaging 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 0.3 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game. The Clippers are the third seed in the Western Conference.
In MLB, Ty France (2013-15) started four games for the Seattle Mariners last week with one game at second base and three at designated hitter. France walked and scored on Tuesday against Baltimore, doubled and scored on Friday, and drove in a run on Saturday in Texas. On the season, France is batting .257 with a .329 on base percentage, three homers, 14 RBI, and 20 runs scored. The Mariners sit at third place in the AL West, 2 1/2 games behind first place Oakland. Washington's Stephen Strasburg (2007-09) has pitched in simulation games as he attempts to return from right shoulder inflammation.
In the NFL, the Denver Broncos signed former Aztec offensive tackle Ryan Pope (2016-18). Pope spent parts of last season on Jacksonville and Green Bay, but did not appear in any games.
On the PGA Tour, all three of the former Aztecs were successful in the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, N.C. Scott Piercy (1999-01) tied for 11th at 3-under-par, Xander Schauffele (2013-15) tied for 14th at 2-under-par, and J.J. Spaun (2009-12) tied for 18th at 1-under-par. Piercy and Spaun will compete in next weekend's AT&T Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas.
