COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Triple jumper Simone Johnson was named the Mountain West Field Athlete of the Week, becoming the first Aztec freshman ever to win the award.

Johnson (Fresno, Calif.) had a triple jump of 42-03.50 (12.89m) at the Long Beach Invitational last Saturday.

Her mark was the fifth best jump in school history, and just half an inch (.01m) off former NCAA champion Shanieka Thomas' SDSU freshman record. Her jump currently ranks second in the Mountain West.

This is the third Mountain West Athlete of the Week award an Aztec has won this season. Pole vaulter Kaitlin Heri was recognized last week after clearing 14-00.00 and Maya Brosch earned the award on March 30 after running the 400m hurdles in 58.74.

The Aztecs are off this weekend before returning to action April 30-May 1 at the UC Riverside-Long Beach State Invitational.
