LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Aztec track and field team finished the second day of the Long Beach Invitational Saturday.

Kaitlin Heri (pole vault) and Maya Brosch (400m hurdles) each earned first place finishes, but the day was highlighted by freshman Simone Johnson's performance in the triple jump. Johnson cleared 42-03.50 (12.89m), the fifth best jump in school history, and just half an inch (.01m) off former national champion Shanieka Thomas' SDSU freshman record.

Heri finished in first for the fourth time in five meets (she took second the other time) after clearing 13-03.50. Teammates Elizabeth Funk (12-11.50), Kaitlyn Swenson (12-05.50) and Delaney Fields (11-05.75) rounded out the top four.

Brosch has finished in first in all four of her 400m hurdles races. On Saturday, she finished in 1:00.25 and was followed by Rhea Hoyte who ran a personal best 1:01.84 and came in second.

In the high jump, Jade Cany and Thaila Wilson tied for second, clearing 5-05.00 (1.65m), which was a personal best for Wilson.

Jada Moore finished third in the 100m dash with a time of 11.85.

The Aztecs placed third, fourth and fifth in the long jump, led by Asia Smith's 18-01.75. Sara Absten cleared 17-10.25 (4th place) and Vanessa Spizewski had a mark of 17-08.75 (5th place).

Danae Dyer posted a new personal best time in the 100m hurdles, finishing in 13.35 while coming in fourth place.

The Aztecs had four distance runners compete in the 10,000m at Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational where they were led by Carlene Masar's 35:27.53, the fifth best time in school history.

The Aztecs have next weekend off and then will return to action April 30 and May 1 at the UC Riverside-Long Beach State Invitational.
