SAN DIEGO – The Aztec track and field team will be competing at the Long Beach Invitational this Friday and Saturday. SDSU will send 37 student-athletes to compete in the two-day meet that will feature USC, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, the Aztecs and the host school, Long Beach State. The Aztecs were originally scheduled to compete at Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational.
Friday's competition will begin at 11 a.m. with the javelin throw. Other field events scheduled for Friday are the hammer throw (12:15), discus throw (1:45) and the shot put (3:00). Friday's first track event will be the 800 meters at 3:00 p.m. and will be followed by three distance events: the 3,000m steeplechase (3:40), the 1,500m (4:30) and the 5,000m (5:00).
Saturday will begin with the long jump at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by the high jump (noon), pole vault (noon) and triple jump (1:30). The running events will kick off with the 4x100m relay at 3 and will wrap up with the 4x400m relay at 5:50 p.m.
Attendance is limited to the families of Long Beach State student-athletes.
Aztec Tidbits
- The Aztecs won the four-team Triton Invitational last Saturday, finishing with 99 points to top UCSD (70), UC Riverside (69) and CSUN (49).
- Competing in their second meet in four days, SDSU won all but two events.
- Kaitlin Heri was named the Mountain West Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. She took first place at both the Mountain West Challenge (14-00.00) and at the Triton Invitational (13-06.25) and became the fifth Aztec pole vaulter to clear 14 feet. She currently has the best mark in the Mountain West and is tied for the 10th best vault in the nation.
- Other Aztecs that took first place at UCSD's Triton Invitational: Jalyn Harris (100m, 11.97), Jada Moore (200m, 24.63), Nyjari McNeil (800m, 2:10.46), Danae Dyer (100m hurdles, 13.57), Rhea Hoyte (400m hurdles, 1:02.04), Jade Cany (high jump, 5-07.00), Vanessa Spizewski (long jump, 18-02.50), Jordyn Bryant (shot put, 47-07.00) and Erica Grotegeer (discus throw, 165-11) and Thaila Wilson (javelin, 128-1). SDSU also took first in the 4x100m relay with the group of Alexus Alexander, Tai McDonald, Jada Moore and Danae Dyer finishing in 45.99
- Entering the weekend six Aztecs are ranked in the top three in the conference and would qualify for the NCAA West Prelims (top 32): Kaitlin Heri (pole vault), Maya Brosch (400m hurdles), Jada Moore (100m), Jordyn Bryant (discus), Erica Grotegeer (discus) and Danae Dyer (100m hurdles).
- Through four meets, all of which were team competitions, the Aztecs have taken first three times and second once.
