SAN DIEGO -- Former Aztecs had a big week in professional sports last week.
On the PGA Tour, Xander Schauffele (2013-15) had an excellent Masters, tying for third at 7-under-par. Schauffele, who is now ranked fifth in the world in Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), has eight top-10 finishes for his career in 15 appearances. Next weekend, Scott Piercy (1999-01) will compete in the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
In the NBA, Malachi Flynn (2020) played in four games last week for Toronto, averaging 11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. On Thursday, he made his first career start, scoring nine points and putting up eight rebounds. In his next game on Saturday, Flynn recorded a double-double with a career highs of 20 points and 11 assists. After making his first career start in February, Jalen McDaniels (2018-19) started all three games last week for Charlotte, including wins in Oklahoma City and Milwaukee. McDaniels put up 16.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 block per game. McDaniels scored 21 points in Wednesday's win over Oklahoma City and 19 points in Friday's win over Milwaukee. Charlotte is the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference. Kawhi Leonard (2010-11) played in three games last week for the Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 29.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 0.3 steals per game. The Clippers won all three games and now sit as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
In MLB, Ty France (2013-15) continues his hot start for the Seattle Mariners. In give games last week, France batted .381 with an on base percentage of .461, scoring four times and driving in two runs. He has played designated hitter, second base, and now some first base for Seattle. Stephen Strasburg (2007-09) made his season debut for Washington on Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader against Atlanta. Strasburg pitched six of the seven innings in the game, allowing no runs, one hit, and two walks, while striking out eight Braves. He did not factor into the decision. Strasburg also had the only extra-base hit of the game for the Nationals, doubling in his lone at bat to right-center field in the third inning off Atlanta starter Huascar Ynoa.
