SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State cross country team will compete in the Mountain West Championships this Friday at 9 a.m. in Las Vegas.

This is just the second XC competition of 2021 for the Aztecs. Their first race, the Silver State Collegiate Challenge, was February 1st and also took place at the Craig Ranch Regional Park. The 6k course features three 2k loops on grass. The forecast calls for clear skies with temperatures in the low 60's.

The Aztecs will have Emily Burd, Amber Elias, Jessica Kain, Lauren Harper, Carlene Masar, Renee Phillips, Naomi Smitham and Bailey Watts competing, the same group from their first competition.

At the Silver State Collegiate Challenge (Feb. 1), the Aztecs took fourth out of five schools. They were paced by Jessica Kain who ran a personal best 21:48.0 (9th place). It was her first time having the top time among SDSU runners.

Carlene Masar, the Aztecs' leading returner from 2019, finished in 14th, crossing the finish line in 22:02.1. Amber Elias, who was running in her first career collegiate race, came in just seconds behind Masar (22:06.6) to earn a 16th place finish.

Lauren Harper (24th, 22:46.6) and freshman Bailey Watts (25th, 22:47.0) rounded out the top five for the Aztecs, who had a spread of 59 seconds, the lowest of the five-team field.

Many of SDSU's runners competed in the Aztecs' track meet against Utah last week. Jessica Kain won the 1,500m with a time of 4:35.09 and was joined by Lauren Harper (3rd, 4:36.64) and Emily Burd (4th, 4:38.07).

Those three along with Alex Lomeli also ran the 800m with Harper finishing first among Aztecs with a time of 2:19.39. Lomeli had a PR of 2:19.74.

Carlene Masar (3rd, 10:15.02), Amber Elias (5th, 10:37.85), Renee Phillips (6th, 10:43.24), Naomi Smitham (7th, 11:06.33), Isabelle Davis (8th, 11:26.41) and Natalie Regalado (9th, 11:49.05) competed in the 3,000m race.
