SDSU Wraps Up First Day of Aztec Invite

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State track and field team wrapped up the first day of the heptathlon at the Aztec Invitational Thursday afternoon. The Aztecs had four student-athletes competing but only Ruthie Grant-Williams, who finished the day in third place, competed in all four events.

In the first event, the 100m hurdles, Sara Absten finished in second place with a wind-aided time of 14.50 seconds. Ruthie Grant-Williams came in third (14.86w).
Absten and Grant-Williams tied for first in the high jump, both clearing a personal best 5-05.75 (1.67m). Freshman Thaila Wilson tied for fourth after clearing 5-03.25 (1.61m).

Wilson had the top Aztec mark in the shot put with a throw of 38-00.25 (11.59m), good for second place. Asia Smith placed third with a throw of 37-08.75 (11.50m), the only event she competed in. Grant-Williams' mark of 33-09.25 (10.29m) earned her fifth and Absten tied for seventh (31-02.75, 9.52m).

Grant Williams was the lone Aztec to run the 200m dash and she came in fourth with a time of 26.74 seconds (wind-aided).

THE NOTE
This was the first collegiate heptathlon for Ruthie Grant-Williams and Thaila Wilson.

UP NEXT
The Aztecs will finish the heptathlon tomorrow beginning with the long jump at 10 a.m. and then followed by the javelin throw and 800m run.
