CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Battling gusty wind and dry, firm greens, the San Diego State men's golf team slipped into a tie for 10th place in the second round of the Lamkin San Diego Classic Tuesday at historic San Diego Country Club. The Aztecs are tied with Brigham Young at 18-over-par 594 on the par-72, 7,033-yard course.

In a day where the scoring average was playing 2.36 strokes tougher than Monday's first round for the 112 competitors, SDSU carded an 18-over 306. San Diego State is still only six strokes from the top 6, which consists of UCLA (-1), Nevada (+8), Colorado (+9), New Mexico (+9), USC (+12) and San Diego (+12).

Steve Sugimoto and Liam Koeneke lead the Aztecs through 36 holes at 2-over 146. Competing as SDSU's No. 3 starter this week, Sugimoto followed up his 1-under 71 Monday with a 3-over 75 today. Sugimoto was in the top 10 for most of the day after recording three birdies in his first seven holes. Starting from the 10th, Sugimoto birdied the par-3, 202-yard 13th and the par-5, 485-yard 14th, before going bogey-birdie on No. 15 (par-4, 397 yards) and No. 16 (par-5, 603 yards). The birdie on the 16th, however, would be his last of the day as he had five bogeys over his final 10 holes to settle for the 75.

Competing as an individual and not counting for San Diego State's team score, Koeneke carded a 5-over 77 today after a 3-under 69 Monday. The freshman had two birdies - par-4, 401-yard fifth and par-4, 367-yard 17th - but also totaled five bogeys and a double bogey on the par-3, 158-yard 11th hole to round out his scoring.

Puwit Anupansuebsai and Jackson Moss, meanwhile are tied for 30th at 4-over 148 after two rounds. Competing as San Diego State's No. 1 in the starting five, Anupansuebsai carded a 4-over 76 today, coming back from a 4-over 40 on the front nine with an even-par 36 on the back nine. Anupansuebsai's two birdies came on the fifth and 14th holes, respectively.

Also competing as an individual, Moss slipped a bit in his second career collegiate round with a 7-over 79 today following Monday's 3-under 69. Moss had birdies on the par-4, 461-yard fourth hole and the 14th, but also was saddled with five bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.

A day after shooting an even-par 72, Zihao Jin was 5-over 77 today and is now tied for 37th at 5-over 149. He had five bogeys in his first nine and six altogether but did birdie No. 14 as the Aztecs' No. 2 in the lineup.

Youssef Guezzale is tied for 46th at 6-over 150 following a 5-over 77 today. Competing as an individual, he had three birdies on the front nine but also a double bogey and two bogeys for a 37. Guezzale couldn't get things going on the back nine with four bogeys and five pars.

Callum Bruce and Joey Moore rounded out SDSU's starting five, carding a 79 and a 78 today. Bruce is tied for 58th at 8-over 152, while Moore is tied for 70th at 10-over 154. Bruce did not have a birdie in the second round. Moore had two - par-4, 460-yard 18th and the fourth - but couldn't overcome a start of 6-over through his first six holes (holes 10-through-15).

Other individuals in action for San Diego State include Amadeo Figus (T-70th, 79 today; 154 total (+10)), Jack Heath (T-83rd, 76 today; 156 total (+12)), Skyler Ngo (T-102nd, 78 today; 162 total (+18)) and Quentin Hill (T-105th, 82 today; 163 total (+19)).

The Aztecs wrap up their play in the Lamkin San Diego Classic Wednesday with the final round, as San Diego State tees off the first hole at 7:10 a.m. PT with Kansas, Brigham Young and UC Davis.
