SAN DIEGO – After almost a year off the collegiate competition courts, San Diego State women's tennis opens 2021 competition Sunday hosting the UC Irvine Anteaters at Aztec Tennis Center.

The Aztecs have met UC Irvine 18 times since 2000, last dueling with the Anteaters on Jan. 28, 2018. SDSU has won the last three meetings between the programs including a 7-0 sweep in 2018 and a 6-1 victory on Feb. 16, 2016, both at Aztec Tennis Center.

Hitting the courts for the first time donning the Scarlet and Black this season are junior transfer Regina Pitts and freshman Alexandria Von Tersch Pohrer. Pitts hails from Los Angeles, Calif. and played her fist collegiate season at Seton Hall in Orange, N.J., earning all-Big East Second Team honors and was named Seton Hall Athletics' Female Freshman of the Year. Von Tersch is an Orange, Calif. native who prepped at the Advantage Tennis Academy in Irvine, Calif. before coming to The Mesa.

The Scarlet and Black were off to a 6-5 start with two consecutive victories before the 2020 season was shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic.  SDSU returns the 2020 all-Mountain west singles selections seniors Tamara Arnold and Nnena Nadozie to lead the squad of nine into a new year of competition. Also at the helm of the program is senior Abbie Mulbarger, who captured a 3-2 singles record and 4-4 doubles record in the shortened 2020 campaign.

The dual match is set to begin at noon at Aztec Tennis Center. At this time, no fans will be permitted to attend SDSU home matches at Aztec Tennis Center due to COVID-19 protocols.
