SAN DIEGO – The Aztec track and field team will kick off their 2021 outdoor season Thursday when they take on the University of Utah in a dual meet. There will be 10 track and seven field events beginning at 10 a.m. on the SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs will have 44 student-athletes competing.
Aztec Tidbits
- This will be SDSU's only meet until March 25-27 when they host the annual Aztec Invitational.
- The Aztecs, joined by the majority of the Mountain West, will not be competing in an indoor season.
- The Aztecs have 32 upperclassmen (11 seniors and 21 juniors).
- 38 of SDSU's 51 student-athletes hail from California.
Looking Back on the 2020 Season
- The Aztec track and field team finished second at the Mountain West Indoor Championships with 126.5 points, their most points at the MW Indoor Championships since 2004.
- SDSU won gold in the pole vault (Kaitlin Heri), pentathlon (Asia Smith) and the 4x400m relay.
- Smith and the 4x400m team (Danae Dyer, Jalyn Harris, Nyjari McNeil and Sakura Roberson) qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. However, a day before the NCAAs were set to begin, the event was called off due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The Aztecs finished first (Kaitlin Heri), second (Molly Scharmann), third (Elizabeth Funk) and fourth (Alysia Allen) in the pole vault at the Mountain West Indoor Championships.
- Nine Aztecs were named to the All-Mountain West Team: Danae Dyer (200m, 60m hurdles, 4x400m relay), Elizabeth Funk (pole vault), Jalyn Harris (400m & 4x400m relay), Kaitlin Heri (pole vault), Nyjari McNeil (800m & 4x400m relay), Sakura Roberson (400m & 4x400m relay), Molly Scharmann (pole vault), Neele Schuten (60m hurdles) and Asia Smith (pentathlon).
- SDSU indoor school records set last year: Sakura Roberson (600m, 1:29.84), Nyjari McNeil (800m, 2:08.30), 4x400m Relay (3:33.81, Harris, Dyer, Roberson, McNeil) and Distance Medley Relay (11:53.85, Lauren Harper, Nyjari McNeil, Sakura Roberson and Emily Burd).
- Danae Dyer took second place in the 60m hurdles at the Mountain West Indoor Championships with a time of 8.21, the second-fastest time in SDSU's indoor history. Dyer also took second in the 200m dash, finishing in 23.55, the third best time in program history.
- SDSU had competed in just one outdoor meet before the rest of the season was called off.
