SAN DIEGO – KJ Feagin, a member of the 2019-20 San Diego State men's basketball team which was ranked as high as No. 4/4 and finished with a 30-2 overall record, has been named to USA Basketball's 14-player 2020-21 FIBA AmeriCup Qualifying Team. The announcement came for USA Basketball's headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday afternoon.
Last season, Feagin earned honorable mention All-Mountain West honors from both the coaches and media that regularly cover the conference. In addition, the native of Carson, Calif., was named to the Mountain West All-Defensive Team and was included on the 2020 Mountain West All-Tournament Team.
Feagin, who came to San Diego State as a graduate transfer and competed for one season, was one of six Aztecs to play in all 32 games in 2019-20 and one of three to start every game. He averaged 9.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 30.4 minutes per game. In addition, he had 19 steals and nine blocks. His rebound average and total rebounds (104) were both career-highs. He finished with 12 double-figure scoring games, including four of 20+ points, and a season-high 23 against Boise State on Jan. 11, 2020. His 38.41 three-point field goal percentage ranks No. 9 on the program's career list and on the single-season lists he ranks No. 11 in victories (30) and No. 25 in three-point field goal percentage.
The 2020-21 FIBA AmeriCup qualifiers feature 16 teams from the Americas zone divided into four groups of four teams. The top three finishing teams in each Group will earn a berth in the FIBA AmeriCup 2022.
FIBA AmeriCup 2022 qualifying consists of three windows, and each window features two games. The first window was held Feb. 20-24, 2020, and the USA team earned a pair of wins. Window two took place Nov. 27-30, and the USA improved its record to 4-0 and earned the United States its berth into the FIBA AmeriCup 2022. The third and final qualifying window is scheduled to be held Feb. 17-22, 2021. The Americans are slated to close out play against the Bahamas on Feb. 19 and Mexico on Feb. 20.
The FIBA AmeriCup 2022, considered the FIBA Americas zone championship, will feature 12 nations from North America, Central America, the Caribbean and South America.
The USA men won the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup with a 5-0 record, and in its next most recent participation in 2007, the U.S. rumbled over its opposition in Las Vegas and finished 10-0 to win gold and capture one of the FIBA Americas zone's two qualifying berths for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Overall, USA Basketball officially has now fielded teams in nine AmeriCups (formerly known as FIBA Americas Championships), and has won seven gold (2017, 2007, 2003, 1999, 1997, 1993 and 1992) and one silver medal (1989), while compiling a 65-10 win-loss record.
The USA will train daily Feb. 13-18 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and will play Bahamas (1-3) on Feb. 19 and Mexico (2-2) on Feb. 20.
