Aztec Storylines
- The San Diego State lacrosse team continues its 2021 slate with two Pac-12 matchups-- one at home, Friday, Feb. 19 with the Oregon Ducks, and one on the road, Sunday, Feb. 21 in Tempe, Ariz. on the campus of Arizona State.
- Opening draw for Friday's matchup is set for 6 p.m. PT while Sunday's day game is slated to start at 1 p.m. MT (noon PT). Live stats and streams will be available for both matches and linked on GoAztecs.com.
- Redshirt-freshman Katelyn Murphy and junior Cailin Young were named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Players of the Week, the conference offices announced Tuesday, Feb. 16. In the Aztecs' Saturday matchup vs. No. 13 USC, Young made an impact on both sides of the field. The junior's stat line included a goal, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Murphy led the way for the Aztecs' rookies, grabbing a ground ball in SDSU's contest with the Women of Troy. Her first pickup of the day led to the Scarlet and Black's fourth goal of the game, putting SDSU up 4-2 with 19:09 left to play in the first. Both awards are the student-athletes' first weekly awards won as an Aztec.
- The Aztecs opened the season with a bout with Pac-12 foe No. 13 USC, falling 20-6 at Aztec Lacrosse Field. Aztecs' (0-1) scoring was led by senior Lexi Tan who scored two goals on three shots while adding a caused turnover. Also aiding in SDSU's scoring were seniors Emily Resnick and Taylor Sullivan, each adding one point to the scoreboard, and junior Cailin Young, who added a goal, two ground balls and a caused turnover to her stat line. Senior captain Bailey Brown drew seven draw controls for the Aztecs along with an assist and a ground ball while sophomore Camdyn O'Donnell assisted on two of the Aztecs' goals.
- SDSU's defensive attack in their matchup with USC was led by freshmen Annie Jubb and Katelyn Murphy, each recording a ground ball. Senior netminder Katy Sharretts grabbed 10 saves and three ground balls.
- Head Coach Kylee White has scheduled a challenging slate for the Aztecs throughout 2021, including matchups with five Pac-12 programs and a trip to Denver, Colo. to take on the No. 11-ranked University of Denver program (IWLCA poll, Feb. 1, 2021).
- The Scarlet and Black look to defend their 2019 MPSF title as the two-time consecutive champions (2018, 2019) are scheduled to host both MPSF-foes UC Davis and Fresno State at home this season. The Aztecs will also visit the Aggies on the road in April before meeting both teams at the MPSF Championships from April 29-May 2 in Fresno, Calif.
- Rounding out the Aztecs' impressive scheduling is Coastal Carolina, as SDSU hosts the Chanticleers on March 27 at 1 p.m. The game marks the first meeting between the two young programs, as the Aztecs played their first game in 2012 while the Chanticleers' program began in 2013.
- The Aztecs return four seniors from the 2020 campaign: goalkeeper Katy Sharretts, midfielders Emily Resnick and Taylor Sullivan, and defender Gabbie Garrison. Each of the four were afforded the extension of eligibility for an additional season of competition due to the global pandemic. Garrison, Sullivan, and Sharretts are three of the team's five captains for the 2021 season.
- With both the pandemic and planned redshirt years, freshman Avonna Usher and Katelyn Murphy look to add depth and skill to the midfield position this season. The duo and senior Bailey Brown, junior Courtney Robinson as well as junior Cailin Young in the draw circle make up the experienced midfielder crew likely to see plenty of time in games this season.
- The Aztecs' defense is in good hands with seniors Gabbie Garrison and Lindsey Gierke and junior Shelby Hook. With the added youth of sophomore Makenna Nichols and redshirt freshman Annie Jubb, SDSU's defense is one to be feared when driving down the field.
Up Next
The Aztecs prep to meet their fourth-consecutive Pac-12 opponent on Feb. 28, when the Scarlet and Black travel to Berkeley, Calif. for a Sunday morning matchup with the Golden Bears.
Opponent Notebook
Oregon
Friday's match under the stars will be the Ducks' first test in 2021 and first game in 348 days. Due to the pandemic, Oregon's 2020 season was halted after seven games where the Eugene, Ore. based program tallied a 2-5 record. The Ducks are led by third-year head coach Chelsea Hoffman who has a 5-20 record at the helm of the program. SDSU holds a two-game win streak in their series with the Ducks, besting them in two consecutive neutral-site matches in 2017 and 2019. The program's last meetup saw the Aztecs head back to San Diego with a 13-8 victory, led by two goals apiece by current Aztecs senior Taylor Sullivan and junior Cailin Jones.
Arizona State
The dual between the Aztecs and Sun Devils comes just 367 days after their last matchup where SDSU ran away with the victory, 19-18, in exciting fashion on Feb. 20, 2020. With two goals in the last 1:25 of the game from Emily Resnick and Camdyn O'Donnell, the Scarlet and Black came back from a 17-15 deficit with 4:22 left to play for the win over ASU. The Sun Devils accrued a 5-3 record in their shortened 2020 season including wins over UC Davis, Fresno State, and California. ASU is led by head coach Tim McCormack who is in just his second year with the program, joining the Sun Devils coaching staff on July 12, 2019.
