SAN DIEGO – Head men's soccer coach Ryan Hopkins has announced the signing of Donovan "Dono" Roux, a 5'10" attacking midfielder from Davidson, N.C., and the younger brother of current Aztec Tevenn Roux.
"Dono is an exciting two-way attacking player that is a wonderful pick up for the program," Hopkins said. "He has spent time in a USL environment, so he understands the rigors and the daily investment it takes to succeed at our level. He brings a dynamic ability to beat defenders off the dribble and play the final pass which will fit perfectly with our vertical style of play. Dono will also make his mark on the defensive side of things with his tenacious ability to press the ball and his competitive fire. It will also be exciting to have two brothers together in the program as we continue to methodically develop our unselfish team culture."
Roux most recently played for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks of the USL on loan from the nearby Colorado Rapids Academy, where he played for their U17 and U19 squads.
Growing up in Davidson, N.C. ,Roux played for the Carolina Rapids Academy (U14 & U16) before being invited to the Generation adidas (GA) Cup by their affiliate, the Colorado Rapids, who offered him a spot on the team.
"I chose San Diego State because Coach Hopkins is starting to build something great," Roux said. "I trust him very much to continue to build the program and develop me as a player to get me to the next level."
In the upcoming 2021 spring season Dono will play alongside his older brother Tevenn, who has made 29 starts and appeared in 44 matches over the past three years for the Aztecs.
"Playing with my brother has always been something I've wanted to do, so when I was offered a chance to do so, it was hard to decline," the younger Roux explained. "I look forward to playing with him and helping him develop even more as a player and it will be a memory I will cherish forever."
Roux is the fifth signee under Coach Hopkins joining midfielder Iñigo Villaldea Eraña (Gijón, Spain), forward Eloge Iradukunda (Maputo, Mozambique), forward Rommee Jaridly (Chino Hills, Calif.) and defender Fritz Oestreicher (Darmstadt, Germany).
