SAN DIEGO – San Diego State's Ignacio Martinez has been selected as the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his vital role in the Aztecs' 5-2 dual-match victory at UC Irvine on Feb. 1.
With his honor, the SDSU junior earned the second conference weekly award of his career and SDSU's second of the year after David Hough received the same distinction on Jan. 22.
Martinez ended two personal losing streaks with a pair of wins last Saturday, helping the Aztecs defeat the Anteaters for the fifth straight time and improve to 15-6 in the all-time series.
In doubles play, the Weston, Florida, product supplied the clinching point after joining forces with Aaro Pollanen at the No. 1 position for a narrow victory over Bruce Man-Son-Hing and Mateusz Smolicki, 7-6(4). With the triumph, the SDSU duo put the brakes on a four-match losing skid and gave the Scarlet and Black a 1-0 lead on the team scoreboard it would not relinquish.
Later in singles, Martinez provided the second of three straight Aztec victory after defeating Mike Mrktchian in the sixth spot, 6-4, 6-2. As a result, the interdisciplinary studies major snapped a six-match slide in singles competition dating back to the fall tournament schedule.
Martinez and San Diego State return to the court this weekend when they square off against Loyola Marymount in a non-conference road match, starting at 2 p.m. PT in Los Angeles.
