SAN DIEGO – The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Selection Committee gave teams and fans an in-season look at a scenario for the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship bracket if the season had ended on Friday night and for San Diego State men's basketball, the committee had the team as one of the four No. 1 seeds.

The top-16 seeds were revealed, ranked and put into regions.  San Diego State was the overall No. 4 seed in the bracket and the No. 1 seed in the East Region.  The other three teams in the East Region were Duke (No. 2), Maryland (No. 3) and Butler (No. 4).

In the scenario revealed on Saturday, San Diego State would play at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento in its first and second round games on March 20 and 22.  If the Aztecs were to advance, they would next compete in Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 27 and 29. From there, if they continue to advance, the team would compete in the Final Four in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga., beginning April 4 with the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship game being contested on April 6.

If rankings remain as they were revealed today, San Diego State's No. 1 seed would be the highest the program has ever achieved, having been a No. 2 seed in the West Region in the 2010-11 NCAA Tournament.

The three other No. 1 seeds were Baylor (No. 1 overall and in the South Region), Kansas (No. 2 overall and in the Midwest Region) and Gonzaga (No. 3 overall and in the West Region).  In each of the last three years, three of the four No. 1 seeds in February stayed as No. 1 seeds in March. The full field of 68 teams will be revealed on Selection Sunday on March 18.

San Diego State, which is the last undefeated team in the nation and ranked No. 4 in both major polls, will put its 23-0 record on the line at Air Force tonight at 6 p.m. (MT).  The Aztecs are ranked No. 1 in the NET for the 31st day this season.  The NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) replaced RPI last year as the primary sorting tool for evaluating teams during the season.  NET relies on game results, strength of schedule, location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses to create its rankings.
