COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State's Brandon Heicklen has been named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is the second consecutive week the senior punter earned the award and third time this season.
An Aztec has now won the MW Special Teams Player of the Week award four times this year in 12 chances and a league-high 10 times over the past two seasons in 24 opportunities (the only other MW schools with multiple special teams player of the week awards are Utah State (6), Nevada (4), Boise State (2) and San Jose State (2)).
Playing in his final game at SDCCU Stadium, Heicklen helped SDSU beat the Cougars, 13-3. Heicklen punted seven times for 323 yards (46.1 avg.) and a net average of 43.6. He had five punts inside the 20-yard line, including two inside the 10 and one inside the 5. Heicklen helped limit BYU to an average starting position of its own 22-yard line and an improvement each quarter (29 in first, 23 in second, 19 in third and 14 in the fourth). Only two of his seven punts were returned and only one for positive yardage.
Out of Heicklen's last 15 punts, 12 have landed inside the 20-yard line, seven inside the 10 and four inside the 5.
On the season, Heicklen has punted 67 times for 3,043 yards (45.4 avg.). Heicklen, who ranks third in SDSU single-season history in punt average (45.42), leads the Mountain West in punt yards (3,043, 9th in FBS), punt yards per game (253.58, 9th in FBS), punts (67, T-14th in FBS) and punts per game (5.58, T-15th in FBS).
For his career, Heicklen ranks fourth all-time at San Diego State in total punts (194) and punt yards (8,146), and seventh in punt average (42.0).
The Aztecs (9-3) await their bowl destination, which will be announced on Sunday.
