LAS VEGAS – The San Diego State doubles tandem of Ignacio Martinez (Weston, Fla.) and Daniel Traxler (Dallas, Texas) split two matches during the second wave of action Saturday at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic on the campus of UNLV.
The Aztec duo opened with a narrow 8-7 decision over the Cal Poly pairing of Antoine Noel and Gary Vardanyan in the quarterfinals, but could not duplicate the feat in their semifinal encounter with UNLV's Alex Kobelt and Jordan Sauer, who emerged with an 8-1 triumph.
Over in the consolation bracket, the combo of Alex Scemanenco (San Diego, Calif.) and Fabian Roensdorf (Dortmund, Germany) suffered an 8-4 setback at the hands of Gonzaga's Kyle Everly and Theo McDonald.
SDSU also fell short in its two singles matches during a light day of bracket play for the Scarlet and Black on the courts of the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Scemanenco dropped a straight-set decision to UNLV's Jackson Atherton, 6-3, 7-6, in the semifinals of Flight Three, while Roensdorf was edged by Cal Poly's Vardanyan in a super-tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-2, 11-9, in the consolation semifinals of Flight One.
In an added singles match, Martinez retired after falling behind 4-0 in the second set to Gonzaga's McDonald, who captured the first set by a 6-0 count.
With Saturday's results, San Diego State has completed its appearance in the Larry Easley Memorial Classic. The Aztecs will be on hiatus until Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020, when they open their dual-match schedule at UCLA as part of the ITA Kick Off Weekend.
