The San Diego State cross country team wraps up their 2019 season Friday morning at the NCAA West Regionals in Colfax, Wash. The women's 6K is set for 11:30 a.m. at the Colfax Golf Club. The race will be streamed by FloTrack, which requires a subscription.
Teams competing include: Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Cal Poly, Cal St. Fullerton, California, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, Hawai'i, Idaho, Long Beach St., Loyola Marymount, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Pepperdine, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento St., San Diego, San Diego St., San Francisco, San Jose St., Santa Clara, Seattle U., St. Mary's (Cal.), Stanford, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, UNLV, Washington and the host, Washington State.
Slated to run for SDSU: Paige Comiso, Marissa D'Atri, Lauren Harper, Alex Lomeli, Carlene Masar, Renee Phillips and Naomi Smitham. The forecast calls for rain and temperatures in the mid 40's.
Last Time Out
The Aztec cross country team finished 10th at the Mountain West Championships in Logan, Utah.
Running in temperatures below freezing, SDSU was paced by the sophomore duo of Carlene Masar (22:26.2) and Marissa D'Atri (22:34.1), who finished in 59th and 61st respectively.
"The top two girls [Masar & D'Atri} ran well today," coach Shelia Burrell said after the race. "Considering the elements and this being the first time many of the girls have run at high altitude, our performance today indicates we are moving in the right direction toward developing a more competitive team."
Rounding out the top five for SDSU was junior Renee Phillips (75th; 23:23.0), freshman Alex Lomeli (78th; 23:33.3) and sophomore Paige Comiso (80th; 23:39.0). Also competing for the Aztecs were freshman Lauren Harper (84th; 24:04.3) and sophomore Naomi Smitham (88th; 24:40.7).
New Mexico, who is ranked No. 11 in the country, took first place and had three runners in the top five. Lobo All-American Weini Kelati was the first to finish, crossing the line in 19.11.15, 49 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Aztec Storylines
• The Aztecs had the same top five finishers as they did in their last race, the Bronco Invitational.
• Carlene Masar has finished in the top two among Aztecs in every race of her career.
• When both are healthy, Masar and Marissa D'Atri have been the top two finishers in every race.
• Junior Renee Phillips has finished top five among Aztec finishers in every race this season.
• This will be the second straight race the Aztecs have run in temperatures in the 40s or below. It is forecasted to be their first race of the year in the rain.
