COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State's Luq Barcoo has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is the first MW accolade for the senior cornerback and third by an Aztec this season (also Kyahva Tezino and Matt Araiza).
Barcoo led SDSU to a 24-10 win at Colorado State on Saturday night, recording six tackles, three interceptions and a pass breakup. Barcoo had his three interceptions in consecutive snaps by the Ram offense, the first time that has happened in FBS play since at least 2012. Barcoo, who became the first San Diego State player with three interceptions in a game since current Atlanta Falcon Damontae Kazee on Sept. 5, 2015, also became the first player with an interception in three straight drives since Nevada's Dameon Baber did so on Nov. 5, 2015. The three interceptions are the most in a FBS game this season.
Barcoo and the Aztecs limited a CSU team that came into the weekend averaging 510 yards per game to just 235 yards of total offense, its fewest in a game since gaining 225 vs. Colorado on Sept. 2, 2014. Additionally, Colorado State managed only 18 rushing yards on 25 carries (0.7 avg.) against the staunch SDSU defense, despite coming into the game averaging 181.60 yards on the ground.
For his efforts, Barco also landed on the Pro Football Focus National Defensive Team of the Week and was named the national defensive player of the week by College Sports Madness.
On the season, Barcoo has 24 tackles (18 solo), three tackles for loss, a team-high four interceptions and a team-high-tying six pass breakups. He leads the league and ranks second in FBS in both interceptions (4) and interceptions per game (0.80), and is second in the MW (T-3rd in FBS) in passes defended per game (INT + PBU) (2.00).
