SAN DIEGO – San Diego State, in conjunction with the Mountain West, released its men's basketball broadcast and non-conference schedules for the 2019-20 season on Wednesday. SDSU will appear on television 20 times as currently configured and will play three perennially nationally ranked team in its non-conference schedule.
As currently slated, the Aztecs will play on CBS Sports Network 10 times, on the ESPN family of networks four times, and on STADIUM three times. In addition, SDSU will be on FS1 twice and the Pac-12 Network once.
SDSU's appearances on CBS Sports Network will all come during the conference season. The slate includes rematches of the 2019 MW title game against Utah State (Jan. 4 & Feb. 1), a single game against 2018-19 Mountain West regular season co-champion Nevada (Jan. 18), and both games against UNLV (Jan. 26 & Feb. 22).
The ESPN games feature Boise State (Jan. 11), at Fresno State (Jan. 14), versus New Mexico (Feb. 11) and at Nevada (Feb. 29).
SDSU's three appearances on STADIUM kick off against Grand Canyon on Nov. 13, then at Colorado State on Dec. 4 and finally against Fresno State on Jan. 1.
Along with the broadcast schedule, the MW revealed game day shifts to accommodate its television partners. The Aztecs have six games affected: at Fresno State, vs. Wyoming, at UNLV, vs. New Mexico, at Boise State and vs. Colorado State.
The Mountain West's broadcast partners may still select games to broadcast, but SDSU will pursue local options for its home contests which are not part of today's announcement.
The team's non-conference schedule, which includes 10 games, five of which are in Viejas Arena, is highlighted by a pair of multi-team events against schools that competed in the postseason last year.
The Aztecs will spend Thanksgiving in Las Vegas competing in the Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational. SDSU opens the tournament against Creighton on Nov. 28. The Bluejays ended 2018-19 one game shy of reaching the semifinal of the NIT and a trip to New York. Regardless of the outcome of the San Diego State vs. Creighton game, the Aztecs will face an NCAA Tournament team on Nov. 29. As a No. 4 seed in last year's NCAA Tournament, Texas Tech (31-7) reached the championship game against Virginia. Iowa, as a No. 10 seed, reached the round of 32 in the 2019 NCAA Tournament and finished with a 23-12 record. The Aztecs vs. Creighton game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on FS1. The championship and consolation games on Nov. 29 will also be broadcast on FS1 with game times to be determined later.
On December 21, San Diego State makes its first appearance in the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles playing in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic presented by Citi. The one-day, two-game event has SDSU playing Utah in the opener. The meeting of former conference foes will be the 74th in the series. Utah completed 2018-19 at 17-14 and finished in third place in the Pac-12 standings. The Aztecs game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
The non-conference schedule kicks off with an exhibition against UC San Diego on Oct. 30. The Tritons posted a 26-8 record last year, won the CCAA Tournament championship, and reached the round of 32 in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The regular season tips off against Texas Southern (Nov. 5), which went 24-14 in 2018-19 and made an appearance in Viejas Arena. The Tigers played for the SWAC championship for the third consecutive year and reached the semifinal game of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) last season.
The first foray on the road comes Nov. 9 at Brigham Young. The Cougars were 11-5 in WCC play, 19-13 overall, and lost to San Diego in the conference tournament. Provo has always been a tough place to play for opponents, but the Aztecs have beaten Brigham Young in each of its last two meetings there.
SDSU returns home for a game against Grand Canyon (Nov. 13). GCU was 5-8 away from its home court last season, 20-14 overall, and lost in the first round of the 2019 College Basketball Invitational (CBI). The teams have met three times, with the Antelopes winning each matchup, including twice on the Aztecs home court.
Staying in the city, the Aztecs travel down Mission Valley to play at San Diego (Nov. 20). The Jenny Craig Pavilion is a facility that has been kind SDSU having won five straight games on USD's home court. The Toreros (21-15) reached the semifinals of the WCC Tournament and then competed in the NIT, falling at Memphis in the opening round.
San Diego State hosts LIU on Nov. 22 and Tennessee State on Nov. 25, two teams it has never faced. The games are the non-bracketed portion of the Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational. Over the summer, the athletics programs of LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post combined to create one entity, LIU. Tennessee State was 9-21 last season, including 6-12 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Following the Tennessee State game, SDSU travels to Las Vegas for that portion of the LVI.
After a pair of Mountain West games on Dec. 4 and 8, the Aztecs finish out the non-conference schedule with two contests.
San Diego State will be in STAPLES Center for the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic on Dec. 21 against Utah and the curtain on the non-conference slate falls on Dec. 28 against Cal Poly in Viejas. The Mustangs were 6-23 last season and did not make the Big West Tournament. SDSU is 23-4 at home against Cal Poly, including wins in the last 11 in a row. This will be the first meeting since the 2010-11 season.
The Aztecs return six of their top nine scorers off a team that posted a 21-13 record and advanced to the championship game of the Mountain West Conference tournament in 2019. San Diego State is one of just nine schools nationally to win at least 19 games each of the last 14 seasons and is one of 29 schools to play in seven of the last 10 NCAA tournaments.
