BREA, Calif. – The Aztec cross country team finished in eighth place out of 21 teams at the Mark Covert Classic 5k at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif. Saturday morning. Sophomores Carlene Masar and Marissa D'Atri paced the Aztecs with a time of 19:15.4.
"Given the fact it was our first race of the season, I thought we ran reasonably well," Coach Robert Lusitana said after the race. "Conditions were warm and humid, which affected everyone's race times. We had good grouping one through five and one through seven, which is a good sign overall."
Masar and D'Atri placed 36th and 37th respectively and were followed by Lauren Harper (19:34.2) and Renee Phillips (19:34.6).
"As she did last year, Carlene Masar stepped up and raced well once again finishing as our top athlete this week," Lusitana explained.
SDSU had four returners competing in their first collegiate meet: Lauren Harper (47th; 19:34.2), Jessica Kain (51st; 19:36.2), Alex Lomeli (19:47.6) and Bella Goode (90th; 20:22.5).
"Freshmen Lauren Harper and Jessica Kain ran very well in their first race as Aztecs," Lusitana praised.
Also competing for the Aztecs was Paige Comiso (68th; 19:54.6), Naomi Smitham (76th; 20:09.1) and Isabelle Davis (115th; 20:52.3).
THE NOTE
Sophomores Marissa D'Atri and Naomi Smitham improved their times from the 2018 Mark Covert Classic. Smitham beat her 2018 time by over a minute.
