The San Diego State softball team concludes its 2019 season this weekend with road games at Utah State in Logan, Utah. The Aztecs (24-24, 11-10 MW) and Aggies (15-29, 4-16 MW) are scheduled to play at 4 p.m. MT Thursday, 4 p.m. MT Friday and noon MT Saturday.
SDSU is coming off a series sweep over Fresno State on Senior Weekend with wins of 1-0, 3-1 and 4-2. The sweep was San Diego State's first in program history in a conference series over the Bulldogs (33-18, 11-10 MW), who came into the weekend with wins in 11 of their previous 13 league games.
Marissa Moreno (2-0, 1 SV, 0.00 ERA, 10.1 IP, 11 K, 3 BB) and Alicia Garcia (1-0, 0.66 ERA, 10.2 IP, 5 K, 2 BB) were particularly effective in the circle, limiting a team that came into the weekend with a .310 average to a .195 mark in the series. For her efforts, Moreno was named the MW Pitcher of the Week.
Despite missing eight games before league play with an injury, Moreno leads the SDSU pitching staff in all categories, including ERA (3.15), wins (11), appearances (35), games started (18), complete games (7), shutouts (4), saves (4), innings pitched (137.2), strikeouts (112) and opponents' average (.235). Among the MW leaders, Moreno ranks first in appearances, tied for first in saves, fourth in strikeouts and innings pitched, fifth in opponents' average, and 10th in games started and wins.
Garcia (10-6, 3.68 ERA, 95.0 IP) and MJ James (3-7, 5.37 ERA, 90.0 IP) have also logged important innings.
Taylor Adams continues to pace the San Diego State offense, leading the team in average (.338), hits (47) and home runs (4). Shelby Thompson (.325, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 9 2B, 16 BB, .401 OB%) is also above .300 and is hitting a team-high .391 in Mountain West play.
