SAN DIEGO – 31 student-athletes from the SDSU cross country and track and field teams were honored at the 25th annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet a few weeks ago.
"It has become a source of pride for our student-athletes to be recognized as scholar-athletes," head coach Shelia Burrell said. "It's an achievement that we have set as a standard in our program and it's great to see our number of scholar athletes grow every year. The banquet is always so nice, and the girls love it."
To be an Aztec scholar-athlete, one needs a semester GPA of 3.20 or higher, or have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Two Aztec distance runners, freshman Carlene Masar and Ellison Grove, who graduated last spring received the Malik Award, which goes to student-athletes who achieve the highest GPA (4.0) in the fall and/or spring semester. Grove was named the SDSU Female Student-Athlete of the Year last year and was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
Additionally, the cross country team was just recognized by the NCAA for recording a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score in the top-10 percent of their respective sport. APR is a multi-year rate based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17, 2017-18 academic years. This was the cross country program's sixth time earning this honor.
