LOS ANGELES – Aztec goalkeeper Maura Cantoni was named the GCC Player of the Week following her standout performance in goal over the last week.
Cantoni helped the No. 20 Aztecs go 4-1 last week with a goals allowed average of 4.39. Over 3.5 games, she collected 46 saves in 124 minutes and allowed just 17 goals.
Last Thursday against Santa Clara in a key GCC match-up, she held the Broncos to just one goal with 12 saves and a save percentage of 92.3 percent.
In the win over No. 19 San Jose State, she tied a season-high with 17 saves and helped lift the Aztecs to a 10-9 overtime win. She held them scoreless in both overtime periods and one sudden death period and only allowed four goals in the game's final 28 minutes.
Against No. 8 Arizona State, she had nine saves and allowed just six goals to the Sun Devils, who average just under 10 a game.
On Wednesday she allowed just one goal in the win over CSUMB in a half of play.
This is the second consecutive week an Aztec has taken home GCC Player of the Week honors (Emily Bennett). The Aztecs, who have won six of their last seven games, play at Fresno State Friday at noon.
