Aztecs Set for Mountain West Indoor Championships
San Diego State will be competing in the Mountain West Indoor Championships February 21-23. The entire meet will be streamed on FloTrack (subscription required). The Aztecs finished in fourth place last year and have 12 athletes that currently rank in the top eight in the Mountain West in addition to their 4x400m relay team. According to the USTFCCCA's Conference T&F Rating Index, the Aztecs enter the weekend sixth.
The meet gets started Thursday at 11:00 a.m. MT with the pentathlon where Asia Smith and Sara Absten will be competing. At 4:20 p.m. MT Marissa D'Atri, Renee Laurenzana, Kasey Ebb and Sakura Roberson will be competing in the distance medley. This will be the first time the Aztecs have competed in this event this season.
The Aztecs should get a big chunk of points on Friday from their pole vaulters. Bonnie Draxler has the nation's best mark and SDSU has four vaulters that rank in the top eight in the conference. The only other field event SDSU will be competing in on Friday is the long jump (1:00 p.m. MT). All SDSU's Friday track events are qualifying rounds where the top eight will advance to Saturday's finals.
The Aztecs have a good chance to rack up points in the 400m where Jalyn Harris has the second best times in the conference, Kasey Ebb has the sixth best time, Maya Brosch just set a new PR (56.73@) and Lisa-Anne Barrow qualified for NCAAs in the outdoor season. SDSU also will have one of the top times in the 4x400m relay.
SDSU also has two athletes with top eight times in the 60m dash with Callista Fletcher (7.42@) and Bonnie Draxler (7.53@).
Track Tidbits
-Senior pole vaulter Bonnie Draxler is one of ten student-athletes named to the prestigious Bowerman Mid-Indoor Watch List. Draxler set a SDSU and Mountain West indoor pole vault record last weekend, clearing 14-10.00 (4.52m) at the New Mexico Collegiate Challenge. Her mark is the tenth best in NCAA indoor history and she currently has the top mark in the nation.
- The Aztecs' pole vaulters are ranked No. 5 in the country in the USTFCCA event squad rankings. These rankings take the average best mark of SDSU's top four vaulters. The Aztecs are third among non-Power five schools.
- Freshman Nyjari McNeil beat her own school record in the 600m two weeks ago at the Don Kirby Invite. She won the event with a time of 1:29.93, beating her previous record by 0.29 seconds. She now has top three times all-time in the 400, 600 and 800.
- Sophomore Jalyn Harris set a SDSU sophomore record in the 400m dash at the Don Kirby Invite. She PR'd with a time of 54.20 for the record, which was No. 5 in program history.
- Sophomore Callista Fletcher took second place in the 60m dash at the Don Kirby Invite two weeks ago. She ran a 7.44 in the prelims and then a 7.40 in the finals, the sixth best time in school history. She was just 0.06 seconds off tying Ashley Henderson's SDSU record for sophomores.
- The Aztecs 4x400m relay team of Kasey Ebb, Jalyn Harris, Sakura Roberson and Nyjari McNeil finished in 3:43.61 at the Don Kirby Invite. This was the fifth fastest time in school history and the fourth best in the Mountain West this season.
- This is the Aztecs fourth straight meets in Albuquerque, essentially their entire indoor season.
- The 2019 Aztec squad is very young. Of the 48 student-athletes, there are just six seniors and five juniors. There are 25 freshmen, although many of them double as cross country runners.
