SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State Track & Field team will kick off their 2019 season at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center this weekend. This will be the first of three consecutive meets in Albuquerque for the Aztecs. SDSU will also send a contingent of pole vaulters to compete at the UCS Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev.
San Diego State and No. 9 New Mexico will be joined by a host of college teams, club teams and national caliber athletes. Other DI schools entered in events include No. 4 USC, No. 30 UCLA, Fresno State, San Francisco State, North Texas, Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, CSUN, Incarnate Word, UTEP, Pepperdine and UC Santa Barbara.
The Aztecs are sending 17 athletes to Albuquerque and Asia Smith and freshman Sara Absten will be competing in four events each.
Friday's field events begin at 4:00 p.m. MT and include the Aztecs will be competing in the high jump, long jump and high jump. The first women's track event on Friday is the 400 meters at 5:20 p.m. MT and will be followed by the 600m and the 200m.
Saturday's competition begins at 9:30 a.m. MT with the shot put. The first track event on Saturday is the qualifying rounds of the 60m hurdles and the 60m dash. Later in the day will be the 400m, 800m, 4x400m relay and the finals of the 60m hurdles and 60m dash.
Six Aztecs will compete at the UCS Pole Vault Summit (Reno, Nev.) this weekend as well. School record holder Bonnie Draxler will be joined by senior Marissa Berry, Kaitlin Heri, Taylor Alexander, Rachel Craft and Alysia Allen, who will be making her collegiate debut. Draxler will compete Friday evening and the rest of the Aztecs go on Saturday.
Last season, the Aztecs finished fourth at the Mountain West Indoor Championships and sent Ashley Henderson (60m & 200m) and Bonnie Draxler to the NCAA National Championships.
