SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State track and field team hosted another successful Red-Black All-Comers and Intrasquad Meet on Dec. 8. A new meet record was set with 469 athletes competing.
The red team narrowly edged out the black squad by a score of 61-59. The meet was highlighted by Bonnie Draxler's record-breaking performance in the pole vault. She cleared 14' 6" to break a 10-year old school record set by Stephanie James (14" 3.5") in 2008.
Asia Smith set a new personal best in the high jump with a mark of 1.73m, which ties for the tenth best jump in program history.
Draxler and Jordyn Bryant had the highest point totals with 13 each. In addition to the pole vault, Draxler was the top Aztec finisher in the 60m dash (7.42) and took second in the weight throw (7.29m). Bryant, a freshman from Oakland), took first in the shot put (13.69m), was first among Aztecs in the javelin (37.70m) and second overall in the discus throw (38.30m).
Other Aztecs that took first included freshmen Erica Grotegeer, Nyjari McNeil, Tai McDonald and Danae Dyer and senior Lisa-Anne Barrow. Grotegeer (Plumas Lake, Calif.) won the discus throw (47.65m) and the weight throw (12.25m). McNeil (Reisertown, Md.) set a meet record in the 600m (1:31.88) and won the 1,000m (2:57.82). Dyer (Temecula, Calif.) won the 60m hurdles (8.62). McDonald (Sacramento, Calif.) took first in the 150m dash (18.37) and also finished in second in the 60m dash (7.67).
Barrow, who is coming off a breakout season, won the long jump (5.71m) and the 300m dash (38.34) and helped her relay team win the 4x400 (3.50.35) along with Lakin Hatcher, Maya Brosch and Sakura Roberson.
Meet participants ranged from ages 5 to 77 and came from Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Oregon and Mexico.
THE NOTE
Three meet records were set by Aztecs, all of which were also personal bests: Nyjari McNeil (600m 1:31.88), Asia Smith (High jump; 1.73m) and Bonnie Draxler (Pole vault; 4.42m).
UP NEXT
The Aztecs begin the indoor season January 18 with the MLK Collegiate Invitational at New Mexico. The pole vaulters will head to Reno, Nev. for the UCS Pole Vault Summit.
