SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State baseball has announced the signing of 11 high school seniors to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, including eight players who rank inside Perfect Game's top 500 among the class of 2019. All 11 players come from California high schools, with a pair coming from San Diego county.
Jordan Keller - INF - 6'4" - 215 - R/R - Woodcrest Christian High School - Moreno Valley, California
Ranked as the second best third baseman in California and the 356th best overall player in the country according to Perfect Game... Owns a career .436 batting average and .510 on base percentage at Woodcrest Christian... Has hit 11 home runs, two triples, and 24 doubles while driving in 99 runs over 80 career varsity games played.
Coach Martinez: "Jordan was our first commit in this class back when he was a freshman so we have developed a strong relationship with him over the past few years. He is a big time physical bat with a polished swing that fits our aggressive offensive style. He is ready to step in and put up big numbers right away. He is a good student and comes to us having already established a strong work ethic. We are excited to finally get him on campus."
Caden Miller - INF - 5'11" - 175 - S/R - Bishop Alemany High School - Newhall, California
Ranks as the 25th best shortstop in California and a top 500 player in the country according to Perfect Game... Three-year varsity starter at Bishop Alemany High School, having hit six home runs, nine triples and seven doubles with 23 RBI in 76 career games... Owns a career on-base percentage of .400.
Coach Martinez: "Caden is another kid that committed to us his freshman year so we know each other very well. He has made himself a part of the program already and will know what to expect. He is a dynamic player with plus speed who swings it from both sides of the plate. He has the defensive tools to stay in the middle infield and should make an immediate impact. He is a phenomenal student with strong character who will fit the culture of our program."
Danny Veloz - RHP - 6'1" - 185 - R/R - Village Christian High School - San Fernando Valley, California
Ranks as the 36th best right handed pitcher in California and is a top 500 player in the country according to Perfect Game... Owns a 2.05 career varsity ERA over 12 appearances and 27.1 innings pitched... Holding opposing hitters to a .189 batting average over his varsity career.
Coach Martinez: "Danny is a great athlete who can do multiple things on the baseball field. He has a live arm with true sink on his fastball. He also comes equipped with a plus slider that is a real out pitch. He repeats his delivery well and pounds the zone. He brings a high level of toughness and competitiveness and it seems like no situation is too big for him."
Ricky Tibbett - RHP - 6'2" - 180 - R/R - Eastlake High School - San Diego, California
Ranks as the 19th best right handed pitcher in California and the 336th best overall player in California according to Perfect Game... Posted a 7-1 record with a 0.23 ERA as a junior at nearby Eastlake HS... Owns a .167 opponent batting average over 84.2 career varsity innings pitched.
Coach Martinez: "Ricky is one of the best pitchers in the county. We love keeping the local kids home and we are really excited to get Ricky on campus. He has a quick, repeatable arm with two plus off speed pitches. He can throw any pitch in any count and already locates his fastball very well. He will be ready to compete for major innings right away as a freshman. Having committed early, and being a local guy, he has already engrained himself into our program and fits well within our culture."
Dylan Tanner - C - 6'2" - 210 - R/R - Trabuco Hills High School - Foothill Ranch, California
Ranks as the 13th best catcher among Class of 2019 players in California according to Perfect Game... Has hit five home runs and five doubles with 19 RBIs over 47 varsity games played... Recorded a .951 fielding percentage behind the plate as a junior.
Coach Martinez: "Dylan is exactly what we look for in a catcher. He is a big, physical guy with a plus arm who also brings a ton of energy. He has advanced leadership skills and you can tell when he's in the game because he commands the whole field. Our pitchers will love having him on their side. His defensive skills are off the charts and has some serious power in his bat. He's another really good student who will bring high character traits to the program."
Garrett Frechette - OF - 6'3" - 200 - L/L - Orange Lutheran High School - San Diego, California
Ranks as the third best outfielder in California and 13th best outfielder in the country according to Perfect Game... 55th best overall player in the country according to Perfect Game... Hit .264 with three home runs and 19 RBIs during junior season at nearby Cathedral Catholic High School... Will play his senior year at Orange Lutheran in Orange, California... Played in the Perfect Game All-American Game at Petco Park last summer... Played in Area Code games last summer.
Coach Martinez: "Garrett is another local guy that we are excited to keep home in San Diego. He is one of the best players in the country with all the physical tools that you can ask for. He performed at a very high level against the top competition in the country all summer. Beyond that, he is a great kid and a hard worker who will make an immediate impact in our program. Our guys will love having him as a teammate. We are really excited to get Garrett on campus, he has a chance to be very special."
Javy Felix - RHP - 6'2" - 195 - R/R - Santa Cruz High School - Watsonville, California
Ranks as the 11th best RHP in California and the 234th best overall player in the nation according to Perfect Game... As a sophomore at Santa Cruz, went 5-0 with a 1.16 ERA over 36 innings... Allowed 16 hits while fanning 42 batters... Owned a .124 opponent batting average.
Coach Martinez: "Javy is a special talent. He is already one of the best players in the country and has barely tapped into his potential. He has the stuff on the mound to be a weekend starter for us and also the offensive ability to impact our lineup right away. He is another high character kid with strong leadership traits who people gravitate towards."
Jonny Guzman - RHP - 6'2" - 190 - R/R - Orange Lutheran High School - Orange, California
Ranked a top 50 right-handed pitcher in the state of California according to Perfect Game... Member of an Orange Lutheran team in 2018 that spent time ranked No. 6 in the country according to Perfect Game... Helped team to a 25-8 record with a 12-3 mark in league play... Made nine pitching appearances as a junior, logging a 2-1 record with one save and 12 strikeouts in 13.1 innings pitched.
Coach Martinez: "Jonny has a live arm and big time stuff on the mound. His fastball has true sink on it and has a plus slider and split combo to go along with it. He is also very young for his grade so we believe that he is only going to continue to make strides and get even better. He will add depth to our pitching staff. Again, another great kid who will thrive in our program because of the person that he is."
TJ Fondtain - LHP - 6'4" - 190 - L/L - Buchanan High School - Clovis, California
Ranks as the seventh best LHP among California high school seniors according to Perfect Game... Has a 9-1 career varsity record with a 2.09 earned run average over 77 innings pitched... Has struck out 73 batters while holding opposing hitters to a .229 batting average... Played in Area Code Games last summer.
Coach Martinez: "TJ is another big time talent that can do a number of things on the baseball field. He has proven himself against the best players in the country and really stood out against them. He is a physical presence on the mound and a strike thrower with good stuff. He also has major power in his bat. He will impact us on both sides of the ball. He's also a great student and a great kid."
Jacob Widener - LHP - 6'6" - 205 - L/L - San Marcos High School - San Marcos, California
Ranks as the sixth best LHP among California high school seniors and is the 462nd best overall player according to Perfect Game... Named to 2017 WWBA 16U National Championship All-Tournament Team in Cartersville, Ga. ... Named to WWBA 15U National Championship All-Tournament Team in 2016... Played in Area Code Games last summer.
Coach Martinez: "Jacob is another one of the top pitchers in the country that happens to be from San Diego, so we are ecstatic to keep him home. He has continued to make strides and seems to get better each time we see him. He has the size and stuff that everybody looks for. He will compete for major innings right away."
Xavier Carter - INF - 6'4" - 200 - L/L - Capital Christian High School - West Sacramento, California
Third best first baseman in California and fourth best in the country according to Perfect Game... Ranked as the 131st overall best player in the 2019 class according to Perfect Game... Owns a .397 batting average over three varsity seasons at Capital Christian... Hit .425 with four home runs, three triples, and eight doubles as a junior in 2018 over 30 games played... Also thrived on the mound, owning 14 career varsity wins with a 1.69 ERA over 82.2 innings pitched.... Played in Area Code Games last summer.
Coach Martinez: "Xavier is another special talent. He has established himself as one of the best players in the country. We were lucky that he became available late and that we were able to land him. He has the ability to be a complete, five tool player for us. He has a pure left handed swing with big power potential. He is very athletic for his size and adds versatility on defense.
