Aztec Storylines

  • Pablo Pelaez, the Aztecs' leader in goals (5) and points (13) and shots (20), was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason Top 100 earlier in the week. He also was named the San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month for September. Pelaez is tied for third in the Pac-12 averaging 1.18 points per game.
  • The Aztecs have held all five of their Pac-12 opponents to 10 shots or less.
  • The Aztecs' lone goal on Saturday vs. No. 21 UCLA featured a pair of career firsts. Chad Morgan, a redshirt freshman, tallied his first assist when he found Adam Vargas on a long cross. Vargas, a transfer from Cal State Dominguez Hills, then scored his first goal as an Aztec. Vargas recorded his first assist as an Aztec two weeks ago against Oregon State.
  • The Pac-12 currently has four of their six teams ranked in top 40 in RPI. Stanford has the best RPI at No. 20 and is followed by UCLA (No. 24), Oregon State (No. 35) and Washington (No. 36). The Aztecs are fifth in the conference with an RPI rank of No. 84.
  • Through 12 matches, the Aztecs have allowed just two first half goals. However, they have given up 13 in the second half.
  • Two is the magic number for the Aztecs. They are 4-0-0 when they score two or more goals and 0-5-0 when they allow two or more goals.
  • The Aztecs won the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Aztec Soccer Classic earlier this season, the fifth time winning the tournament (2009, '11, '14, '16 & '18). Pablo Pelaez was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player and Keegan Kelly, Aleks Berkolds, Emil Kjellker and Miles Stray were named to the All-Tournament Team.
