SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's soccer forward Angela Mitchell received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, which is presented to student-athletes of color who exhibit academic excellence and community activism.

To be eligible for this honor, candidates must compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.

Mitchell, who completed her senior season in the NCAA tournament back in November, played in 82 games over four seasons at SDSU and tallied 19 goals, including nine game-winners, and two assists for 40 points. Her 19 career goals ranks tied for ninth in Aztec history.

A four-time Mountain West all-academic team selection and 2015 all-conference second-team performer, Mitchell helped San Diego State win MW regular-season titles in 2014 and 2015, and tournament crowns in 2014 and 2017, which led to NCAA tournament berths. In four years, the Aztecs posted a cumulative record of 52-24-9 (32-7-5 Mountain West) with Mitchell on the squad.

The publication Diverse: Issues In Higher Education sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
