GOLD RIVER, Calif. - San Diego State's women's rowing raced in the preliminary events of the WIRA Championships Saturday morning on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. The Aztecs earned lane two in the varsity eight, the third lane in the second varsity eight and the first lane position in the varsity four for Sunday's final races.
The V8 got off the dock at 8:30 a.m. in lane two and was unable to catch the Stanford lightweight women's crew in lane one, who finished first in 6:39.021. The Aztecs battled for the second place time with Sacramento State and Loyola Marymount, but ultimately claimed the spot with a time of 6:44.228, while LMU finished in 6:45.774 and Sac State clocked in at 6:46.290, who finished with open water ahead of Saint Mary's (7:09.262). Santa Clara and Seattle University also finished the prelim race in over seven minutes with times of 7:15.120 and 7:26.124, respectively.
The 9:20 a.m. 2V8 prelim left the Aztecs with the third lane for Sunday's final event as the crew logged a 7:07.914 finish, 11 second behind the leading Stanford lightweight (6:56.813) and two seconds behind Sac State (7:05.681). Finishing behind the Aztecs were Loyola Marymount in 7:21.813, St. Mary's in 7:34.927 and Santa Clara in 7:36.922.
The 10:40 a.m. V4 race had an exciting finish as SDSU came from behind LMU to log a first place time of 8:04.900, while the Lions finished a second later in 8:05.800. Trailing LMU was Sac State, who clocked in at 8:12.100, finishing with open water ahead of Stanford (8:29.100). Santa Clara finished towards the back of the pack in 8:54.300, nearly 30 second ahead of St. Mary's (9:23.100).
With lane positioning determined by Saturday's preliminary races, final events on Sunday for the V8, 2V8 and V4 are scheduled for 8:50 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 10:20 a.m., respectively. A link to live results and live video will be available for the final day of the WIRA Championships on GoAztecs.com.

"Day one went well," head coach Bill Zack said. "The racing was close and we were happy to see all three boats defend their preliminary seeding. The goal tomorrow is to be even more aggressive in our approach to the races. It would be nice to have everyone come home with a medal."
