MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team competed in its first regular season event Saturday against UCLA and Stanford at the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center on Ballona Creek, where they competed in four events, logging second place finishes in the varsity four and third varsity eight, and finished third in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight.

The first race of the day for the Aztecs came with the 3V8 at 9:45 a.m., where Stanford's late addition created a three-boat race rather than the originally scheduled dual with UCLA. SDSU finished just shy of three seconds behind the Bruins (7:26.00) in 7:28.96, just ahead of the Cardinal's 7:31.63.

At 10 a.m., the V4 got underway and once again, the Aztecs' 8:02.00 finish just trailed Stanford's `A' boat, which clocked in at 7:57.50. Stanford also raced its `B' V4 boat, earning third with an 8:06.90 time, and UCLA's V4 crew was unable to finish the race due to breakage at the 750-meter mark.

In the 2V8 at 10:15 a.m., SDSU logged its first third place finish of the morning, coming in at 7:23.78, while UCLA claimed another win with a time of 7:06.10, followed by Stanford at 7:08.56.

The final race for the Aztecs came in the V8 at 10:30 a.m., where the three teams were separated at least 10 seconds a piece. Stanford claimed the No. 1 spot at 6:43.30, while UCLA trailed close to 35 seconds behind at 7:18.30, followed by SDSU at 7:29.00.

THE QUOTE
"It was good to finally get into an official 2000 meter race," head coach Bill Zack said. "The team was not as sharp as we could have been, but we came away knowing exactly what we need to work on over the next couple weeks. Racing against really fast teams like Stanford and UCLA helps the team understand how high the standards are in Division I Rowing. We are looking forward to making some improvements before heading up to the Hornet Invitational."

UP NEXT
The Aztecs's next round of competition comes in two weeks when the team travels to Gold River, Calif., to participate in the Hornet Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, March 17-18, hosted by Sacramento State.
