SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team travels north on Saturday, March 17, when it visits Gold River, Calif., for the Hornet Invitational, hosted by Sacramento State. The two-day event features five teams including the Aztecs, with two sessions Saturday and one on Sunday.

Participating teams the Aztecs will face in the Hornet Invite include host and AAC opponent Sacramento State, Gonzaga, Kansas State and Saint Mary’s. Competition on Lake Natoma is set to begin with the varsity eight at 8 a.m. each day.

With two sessions on Saturday, the Aztecs will race Sacramento State and Gonzaga for the first V8 at a.m., following by the 2V8 at 8:30 a.m. with the same set of opponents. SDSU also enters a boat in the V4 at 9 a.m. to race Sacramento State and Gonzaga’s A and B boats. The Scarlet and Black close out the morning session with a head-to-head vs. the Hornets in the novice/3V8 at 9:30 a.m.

For the afternoon session on Saturday, SDSU begins with the V8 vs. St. Mary’s, followed by the 2V8 against the Gaels and the Aztec 3V8 boat at 3:45 p.m. SDSU’s final race of the day is set for 4:15 p.m. when they take on St. Mary’s A and B boats in the V4 at 4:15 p.m.

Sunday’s lineup features a series of head-to-head matchups with Kansas State, kicking off with the V8 at 8 a.m., followed by a 2V8 race with the Wildcats at 8:20 a.m., the V4 vs. KSU’s A and B boats at 8:40 a.m., and finally the novice/3V8 race at 9 a.m.

Last season, the Aztecs finished the weekend trip to Lake Natoma with wins over Sac State on Saturday in the V8, 2V8 and 3V8, as well as a second place finish vs. the Hornets in the V4. The team also win its three races against St. Mary’s in the V8, 2V8 and V4. The Scarlet and Black also nabbed first place finishes in the 2V8 and V4 that Sunday, as well as a third-place finish in the V8.

The Aztecs make the trip north after competing at UCLA with Stanford two weeks ago where they claimed second place in both the V4 and 3V8, but came in third in the V8 and 2V8. Following this weekend’s action at the Hornet Invite, the team returns to San Diego to prepare for the annual San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25, on Mission Bay.
