SAN DIEGO - T-No. 21 San Diego State capped off Saturday at the Aztec Invitational with a season-high 15 goals in a 15-3 victory over Sonoma State on Saturday. SDSU improves to 7-9 on the season, while Sonoma State drops to 4-14.
The Seawolves had its only lead of the game after scoring the first goal of the game 1:36 into the first quarter. SDSU responded just 21 seconds later with a goal by Hannah Carrillo, the first of three goals by the Aztecs in the first quarter to take an early 3-1 lead.
SDSU added a trio of goals in the second quarter, pushing its lead to 6-1. After the half, the Aztecs put the game out of reach with another shutout quarter and six goals on the offensive end - including two apiece by Lindsy Peterson and Maddie Higginson - to make it a 12-1 score.
After SDSU opened up the fourth with a Karli Canale score, Sonoma State ended SDSU's 13-0 run at the seven-minute mark of the fourth quarter to make the score 13-2.
The Aztecs capped the scoring with a goal by Katrina King and a tally from Maddy Parenteau as the Aztecs eventually went on to win by a 15-3 final.
The three goals allowed by SDSU are its fewest allowed in a game this season and the fewest since allowing three to Azusa Pacific on April 13, 2017. Goalie Maura Cantoni made three saves in net for the Aztecs.
NOTE I
- The 12-goal margin of victory is the largest for SDSU this season and its largest since defeating Chapman, 17-2, on March 11, 2017, at the 2017 Aztec Invitational.
