The San Diego State softball team was unable to overcome a late North Dakota State rally in a 2-1 loss at the 28th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs dropped to 1-8 with their sixth straight loss, while the Bison won for the second time of the day to improve to 4-3.

SDSU got its run in the bottom of the second inning when Shelby Thompson was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a long single to right-center field by Iesha Hill.

NDSU tied it in the sixth when Katie Shoultz walked and scored on a double by Bre Beatty, just beating the throw home. North Dakota State clinched the win in the seventh when Shoultz' popout to shallow right-center field scored Montana DeCamp from third.

The two teams combined for only seven hits against a pair of stout pitching staffs. Bison pitcher Jackie Sertic allowed the one run on just three hits, a walk and four hit batters over the complete game, striking out 14 San Diego State players. She improved to 3-2 with the win.

The Aztec trio of Marissa Moreno, Julie McDonald and Alex Formby, meanwhile, also pitched well in the loss. Moreno started the game and tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and two walks, while striking out one. McDonald relieved Moreno in the second and yielded one run on four hits and a walk in 3 2/2 innings, striking out two. Formby (0-4) finished the game and gave up one unearned run on no hits and two walks over two innings, striking out two.

Hill, Taylor Adams and Molly Sturdivant had SDSU's hits, while Zaria Meshack reached twice with a walk and a hit by pitch.
