SAN DIEGO - No. 18 San Diego State used a second-half surge to defeat 23rd-ranked CSUN, 8-5, Sunday morning at the Triton Invitational at nearby UC San Diego. The Aztecs secured a spot in the fifth-place game and moved to 4-3 with the result. CSUN, meanwhile, dropped to 5-4.
The two teams were evenly matched in the first quarter as both posted a goal apiece and the same could be said in the second with the Matadors holding a slight edge, outscoring the Aztecs, 3-2. After 16 minutes, CSUN led, 4-3.
The second half is where San Diego State shined both offensively and defensively. The Aztecs scored three times in the frame, while limiting their neighbors to the north to just one goal.
