LOS ANGELES -- The San Diego State men's tennis team recorded two victories in both singles and doubles competition on the opening day of its final fall tournament at the LMU Invitational.
Sophomore Rafael Gonzalez Almazan (Madrid, Spain) won twice for the Aztecs on Friday at LMU Tennis Center, defeating Diego Nava of host Loyola Marymount in singles by a 6-3, 6-1 tally, before joining forces with junior Raul de la Torre (Calexico, Calif.) to knock off the Pepperdine duo of Nicholas Baez and Scotland Garapedian in doubles, 8-4.
Sophomore David Hough (Traralgon, Australia) was also triumphant in singles play, overcoming an early deficit to claim a three-set decision over LMU's Nick Borchenko, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Junior Sander Gjoels-Andersen (Klampenborg, Denmark) and sophomore Arnaud Restifo (Nice, France) combined for SDSU's remaining victory in doubles, outlasting the Pepperdine tandem of Max Mendelsohn and Dane Esses, 8-5.
The LMU Invitational continues on Saturday when the Aztecs face select players from Nevada in singles, starting at 9 a.m. PT, followed by a round of doubles play with competitors from Pepperdine.
