COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Thirty-six San Diego State student-athletes were honored for their high achievement in the classroom as Mountain West Scholar-Athletes for the 2016-17 school year, the conference office announced today.

The 36 Aztecs honored as scholar-athletes is the highest number since the 2012-13 school year, when 49 San Diego State student-athletes attained scholar-athlete status.

The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at SDSU, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.

For the third straight year, track and field had double-digit honorees (11) in addition to five cross country runners on the list. Swimming and diving, softball, women's golf, football and baseball each had three honorees, followed by women's soccer (2), women's tennis (2) and women's basketball (1).

The scholar-athlete announcement comes one day after 69 Aztecs garnered Mountain West All-Academic Team honors for the Spring 2017 semester.
