IRVINE, Calif./PHILADELPHIA - Results - Penn Relays | Results - Steve Scott Invitational
Junior Ashley Henderson won the 100-meter dash at the prestigious Penn Relays to highlight San Diego State track & field's day competing on both the West and East Coasts.
Splitting squads this weekend at the Penn Relays and UC Irvine's adidas/Steve Scott Invitational, San Diego State had a total of 11 top-three finishers, including two individual event champions (Bonnie Draxler, Steve Scott Invitational pole vault; Henderson, Penn Relays 100-meter dash) and the Penn Relays shuttle hurdles championship.
Following a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash heats yesterday, Henderson narrowly edged Jonielle Smith of Auburn by .01 second to win the 100-meter dash championship, crossing the finish line in 11.13.
"I had a late surge," Henderson said, "but I'm really good at catching (the other runners) as I continue to turn over and over. Once I decide this, then I just keep being powerful, and keep turning over."
The Aztecs secured two of the top four spots in the 100-meter hurdles, with senior Micha Auzenne taking second (13.37) and sophomore Sierra Brabham-Lawrence finishing fourth (13.68).
The Scarlet and Black capped a successful showing of its relay teams in the 4x200 Championship of America Invitational, with seniors Starlynn Singleton and Tyra Lea, sophomore Lisa-Anne Barrow and junior Rochene Smith recording the sixth fastest mark in program history at 1:35.99 to place sixth.
At the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational, both Aztec competitors in the 200-meter dash raced to collegiate bests. Placing in the top-10 of their respective events were senior Madison Gipson at seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.60) and sophomore Anushi Desai in the discus throw (153-04.00).
In the 1,500 meters, junior Lily Seynaeve recorded a collegiate-best time of 4:43.44 to place 29th. Also competing in the event was junior Cassidy Towner (4:47.50, 41st), and seniors Elaine Ribeiro (4:59.19, 65th), Angel Bucci (5:03.13, 69th) and Cali King (5:17.98, 85th).
