LOS ANGELES - San Diego State divers recorded a pair of top 10 finishes on the 3-meter board during the opening day of the UCLA Diving Invitational at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Los Angeles. Juniors Alexandra Caplan and Makena Chamoures finished third and 10th respectively in a competition that saw the other top eight places go to Pac-12 divers.
Caplan was second after the preliminary round of six dives with a score of 313.45. Her mark of 282.40 in the finals. However, dropped her into third place with a total of 595.85. UCLA's Maria Polyakova captured the event with a total score of 674.55.
Chamoures found herself in 10th place after the prelim with a mark of 262.40 and her score of 262.20 for the final six dives allowed her to maintain 10th place overall with a mark if 524.60.
Four other member of the Aztec diving team also competed on the 3-meter board, but did not advance to the championship round. That quartet included Marie Yacopino (225.75), Payton Gabris (220.20), Nicole Dutton (212.60) and Delaney Gallagher (180.25). The lowest score to qualify for the 18-divers finals was 237.10.
Competition at the 2017 UCLA Diving Invitational will resume Saturday morning (Jan. 14) with the women's platform and men's 3-meter events. Prelims get underway at 9:30 a.m. with finals scheduled to start at 11:45 a.m.
